What it is about

On 1949 October 1, the day of the founding ceremony of the People's Republic of China, Xiao Dali enters the city and is reorganized as the director of the public security police station. He finds that primary school teacher Feng Jingbo is full of doubts. With the high vigilance of a soldier and the sense of responsibility of a public security official, Dali insists on partnering with Feng and becomes his neighbor. He then spends his whole life carrying out a nearly four-decade pursuit without regrets.

What to expect

On the day the People's Republic of China was founded, a police station chief decides a primary school teacher is hiding something. He moves in next door and spends the next forty years trying to prove it. That is the engine of Feng Xiaogang's period drama: a single suspicion stretched across the 1940s through to the 1980s, with Lei Jiayin and Hu Ge carrying the weight of a relationship built entirely on one man's vigilance and the other's opacity.

The movie is a slow, talk-heavy chamber piece dressed in historical production design — no chases, no gunfights, just the accumulating pressure of proximity. At 141 minutes it asks for patience, and the Mandarin dialogue means non-speakers should confirm subtitle availability before booking. It is playing a tiny Hong Kong release this week: four screenings across two cinemas in two districts, with tickets from HK$70.
