Xiao Dali is a public security officer who, on the very day the People's Republic is founded, decides his new neighbour, a primary school teacher, is not what he seems. That hunch consumes the next forty years of both their lives. Feng Xiaogang directs Lei Jiayin and Hu Ge in a drama that moves from the 1940s to the 1980s, and the movie is content to sit inside that long, uneasy silence between two men rather than force a showdown.
