What it is about
What to expect
Wes Anderson shoots a fictional Eastern European hotel in the years between the wars as if it were a doll’s house, every surface pastel and every frame symmetrical. Ralph Fiennes plays Gustave H., a concierge who treats the establishment as a moral calling, and Tony Revolori is Zero, the lobby boy he takes under his wing. A disputed inheritance, a stolen painting, and a chase that moves from trains to ski slopes give the movie its momentum, but the real pleasure is the brittle, rapid-fire dialogue and the way the hotel itself becomes a refuge from the encroaching violence outside. The tone is lighter than the wartime setting suggests, though the darkness is never far away. Running 100 minutes, the movie is rated IIB in Hong Kong and screens in English with Chinese subtitles. It returns to cinemas on 30 May 2025 as a re-release — check listings for participating venues and formats.

What viewers said
Yet another well crafter Wes Anderson's movie. Fiennes and Revolori perform well and the amount of well known actors and actresses is incredible but we have seen similar ways and scripts in his previous movies. It's entertaining, though.

Wes Anderson's THE GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL is the director's celebration of Central Europe culture and fashion in the years between the World Wars, and an elegy for what was lost with the rise of fascism and communism. Set in 1932 in a fictional country called Zubrowka, the streets, military regalia and (ersatz) German names we are shown could have come from anywhere between Germany and Estonia. Its protagonist Gustave H. […]
