The verdict
There are not yet enough audience votes to give this a reliable score. It is not currently playing in Hong Kong cinemas. 179 minutes.
What it is about
Jean Valjean, who has spent 19 years in prison for stealing a loaf of bread, tries to turn his life around by taking on a new identity and becoming a respected member of society. He promises Fantine, a factory worker who is dying, that he will care for her daughter Cosette, who is being mistreated by the Thénardier family. Valjean raises Cosette as his own child, but Inspector Javert keeps chasing him, determined to prove Valjean is still a criminal.
What to expect
Fred Cavayé’s adaptation strips away the musical numbers and sticks to the novel’s dramatic spine. Vincent Lindon plays Valjean as a man who can never quite outrun his past, while Tahar Rahim’s Javert is less a villain than a system made flesh. At 179 minutes the movie asks for patience — it is a slow-burn period piece, shot in French with English subtitles, and the weight lands in the silences between chases. The story moves through poverty, prostitution, and revolutionary fervour, so the tone is grim rather than rousing. It opens in Hong Kong on 10 October 2026. No certificate has been issued yet, but the subject matter points to a mature rating.
