What it is about

Hong Kong, 1960. A sweltering hot summer. York (Leslie Cheung), an amoral disillusioned and cruel young man is kept in luxury by his foster mother, a retired courtesan, who gives him everything but the one thing he needs to know - the identity of his natural mother. A self-obsessed man, desperately seeking his true identity, York plays carelessly with his lovers, a lonely submissive bargirl (Maggie Cheung) and a beautiful club dancer (Carina Lau) and his friends, before leaving them all for the Philippines in search of the truth that has been denied, and may ultimately destroy him.

What to expect

Wong Kar-wai’s second feature returns to Hong Kong cinemas on 4 September 2026, 36 years after its original release. Set across a sweltering 1960s Hong Kong and the Philippines, the movie follows York (Leslie Cheung), a young man kept by his foster mother, a retired courtesan. He drifts between a bargirl (Maggie Cheung) and a club dancer (Carina Lau), while a policeman (Andy Lau) circles the wreckage. The search for his biological mother pulls the story towards the Philippines, but the movie is less interested in answers than in the humid, claustrophobic spaces between its characters.

The movie runs 95 minutes, carries a IIB certificate, and screens in Cantonese with English and Chinese subtitles. It is playing at 11 cinemas across 9 districts, with 39 screenings in the next seven days. Tickets start at HK$100. All screenings are standard digital format.

What viewers said

I suppose you might call the dashingly handsome "Yuddy" (Leslie Cheung) a bit of a Lothario. He has good looks and charm, and he sails through life thinking only of himself. His ideal existence comes to a bit of an abrupt halt, though, when his alcoholic courtesan of a mother "Rebecca" (Rebecca Pan) reveals to him in a drunken stupor that she isn't actually his mother at all.
