What it is about
Hong Kong, 1960. A sweltering hot summer. York (Leslie Cheung), an amoral disillusioned and cruel young man is kept in luxury by his foster mother, a retired courtesan, who gives him everything but the one thing he needs to know - the identity of his natural mother. A self-obsessed man, desperately seeking his true identity, York plays carelessly with his lovers, a lonely submissive bargirl (Maggie Cheung) and a beautiful club dancer (Carina Lau) and his friends, before leaving them all for the Philippines in search of the truth that has been denied, and may ultimately destroy him.

Wong Kar-wai’s 1990 feature returns to Hong Kong screens. Set in 1960, it follows York (Leslie Cheung), a young man kept in comfort by his foster mother, a retired courtesan, who refuses to tell him who his birth mother is. He drifts between a bargirl (Maggie Cheung) and a club dancer (Carina Lau), while a friend (Andy Lau) looks on. The movie moves at a humid, unhurried pace, carried by Christopher Doyle’s green-tinted photography and a jukebox of Latin and Cantopop tracks that give the aimlessness a bruised, romantic charge. It is a drama built on mood and withheld information rather than plot, and it suits viewers who are happy to sit inside a character’s restlessness for 95 minutes.
