What it is about
What to expect
Wong Kar-wai’s second feature returns on a 35mm print, the format it was shot on. The image carries the soft grain and slightly muted colour of photochemical projection — a different texture from the digital restorations that have circulated for years. The movie itself is a humid, unhurried portrait of Yuddy (Leslie Cheung), a man who weaponises charm and drifts through a series of entanglements after learning the woman who raised him is not his birth mother. Maggie Cheung, Andy Lau, Carina Lau and Jacky Cheung fill out a cast that the director pushes into long, still close-ups and sudden bursts of violence. At 95 minutes, it is compact by Wong’s later standards, but the pacing is loose and the mood is closer to a heatwave than a plot. The IIB certificate flags adult themes and some physical brutality. English subtitles are provided. The screening is a special event — check listings for which venues are carrying the 35mm reel, as it will not play everywhere.
