What it is about

Yuddy, a Hong Kong playboy known for breaking girls' hearts, tries to find solace and truth after discovering the woman who raised him isn't his mother.

What to expect

Wong Kar-wai’s second feature screens in a 35mm print, the format it was shot on. The story is set in motion when Yuddy learns the woman who raised him is not his mother, but the movie spends less time on plot than on the texture of a certain Hong Kong — sweat, rain, half-heard radio, a clock ticking in an empty room. Leslie Cheung and Maggie Cheung share scenes that feel less like courtship than a slow, mutual undoing. The 95-minute runtime is compact by Wong’s later standards, and the IIB certificate reflects some violence and sexual references. This is a limited art-house run with English subtitles; check individual cinemas for session times.
