The verdict
There are not yet enough audience votes to give this a reliable score. It is not currently playing in Hong Kong cinemas. Category IIB · 136 minutes.
What it is about
Scientists believe that there is a single whale in the ocean whose calls reverberate at 52-hertz, a frequency that cannot be heard by any other whale. Based on Machida Sonoko’s award-winning novel, Narushima Izuru’s empathetic drama shines a light on all the ‘52-hertz whales’ in the world, who tragically believe they live the loneliest of existences. After a life of abuse, Kiko moves to a quiet seaside town. There, she meets a young boy who, like her, has also suffered domestic abuse. Through their shared pain, they also find much-needed solace.
What to expect
Kiko leaves an abusive home for a quiet seaside town, where she meets a boy who has endured the same violence. That shared history — and the tentative trust it allows — is the centre of Izuru Narushima’s adaptation of Machida Sonoko’s novel. The title borrows from the real 52-hertz whale, a creature whose call sits outside the frequency any other whale can hear; the movie treats the metaphor lightly, never letting it overwhelm the two lead performances. At 136 minutes the pace is unhurried, and the IIB certificate reflects the domestic-abuse subject matter. This is a single bcSunday screening at one cinema, in Japanese with English and Chinese subtitles. The cheapest ticket is HK$100. With only one show in the next seven days, booking ahead is sensible.
