In early-2000s eastern Germany, brothers Philipp (12) and Tobias (9) watch their family slowly break apart while building an unfinished house. Older youths draw Philipp in with promises of belonging—yet their path carries violence and fear of outsiders. As a refugee shelter is planned nearby, quiet tensions turn sharp. A clear-eyed, tender portrait of youth caught between loss, nature, and the hard search for a place to stand.
What to expect
Two brothers, 12 and 9, drift through an unfinished house and the open fields of early-2000s Saxony while their parents retreat into silence and unemployment. The landscape—quarry lakes, wide sky—offers the only release, but it cannot teach Philipp how to navigate the older boys who promise him a place and pull him toward violence. When a refugee shelter is proposed nearby, the movie tracks how private neglect feeds public hostility without ever raising its voice. Constanze Klaue’s debut stays close to the children’s eyeline, letting small gestures carry the weight. The result is a coming-of-age story that earns its tenderness by refusing to soften the edges.
