What it is about
Kai Aono is a high school student. He transfers to a scenic island in the Seto Inland Sea from Kyoto. There, he meets high school student Akimi Inoue, who was born on the island and lives with her mother. They fall in love with each other, but they are forced to make a choice due to their own fates.
What to expect
Kai transfers from Kyoto to a small island in the Seto Inland Sea and meets Akimi, who has never left. The two fall for each other, but the movie is less interested in how they get together than in what happens after — the slow, unglamorous pressure of family obligation and diverging paths. Adapted from a novel, the story spans years rather than a single summer, so the tone is more reflective than breathless. Ryusei Yokohama and Suzu Hirose carry the central relationship, with Michihito Fujii directing. At 135 minutes it asks for patience. Rated IIA. Japanese audio, English and Chinese subtitles. This week it is screening at one cinema only, six sessions, with tickets from HKD 60.
