The verdict

There are not yet enough audience votes to give this a reliable score. It is not currently playing in Hong Kong cinemas. Category IIA · 124 minutes.

What it is about

A nightmare begins when a kind-hearted, naive college student encounters a beautiful yet hopelessly drunk young woman who later becomes his sassy girlfriend. With violent punches and bizarre antics, she humiliates him in every possible way, at every turn. Yet he still believes in an undercurrent of genuine goodness beneath her chaotic exterior. Once the highest-grossing comedy of its time in Korea, My Sassy Girl sees Jeon Ji-hyun, fresh off the breakout success of Il Mare, delivers a star-making performance.

What to expect

Broadway Cinematheque and the Korean Cultural Centre are screening a 35mm print of My Sassy Girl for one week from 8 October. Jeon Ji-hyun plays a drunk young woman who latches onto a naive university student (Cha Tae-hyun) and proceeds to humiliate him through a two-hour barrage of punches, tantrums, and bizarre demands. The slapstick is relentless, but the movie earns its 124-minute runtime by letting genuine melancholy seep through the cracks — the reason it became the highest-grossing Korean comedy of its era. Jeon had just broken out in Il Mare; here she turns volatility into a star persona. The IIA certificate admits anyone 12 and over, though the emotional swings may be a lot for younger viewers. Korean dialogue, English and Chinese subtitles. Single-venue engagement, so seats are limited.
