What to expect

Neo Sora sets his debut in a near-future Tokyo waiting for a big quake, but the movie spends its 113 minutes on five high-school friends drifting through their final year. The earthquake is a low hum in the background; what fills the frame are petty fights, pranks against a surveillance system the school has just installed, and the aimless energy of teenagers who know their time together is running out. Hayato Kurihara and Yukito Hidaka lead a cast of mostly first-timers, and Sora shoots them with a loose, observational eye that catches the way friendships strain without anyone saying why. The pace is unhurried and the payoff is small, which will suit viewers who like a coming-of-age story that stays close to its characters instead of building toward a climax. Rated IIA, playing in limited release with English and Chinese subtitles.
