What it is about
June, 1940. France collapses and signs the armistice. In the midst of the chaos, an unknown general refuses to give up and flees to London to save what remains of freedom. Without an army, without backing, without hope. Yet, little by little, resistance fighters, rebellious students and determined soldiers rise in England, France and Africa to join the cause. Their faith, audacity and thirst for freedom defy what history seemed to have written in advance.
What to expect
Antonin Baudry’s 160-minute French-language drama opens in the chaos of June 1940, then follows Charles de Gaulle to London as he tries to build a movement from almost nothing. The movie spends its time in meeting rooms, radio studios and private arguments, not on the battlefield — it is a procedural about political will, watched from the perspective of the scattered students, soldiers and officials who slowly decide to join him. Simon Abkarian plays de Gaulle, with Simon Russell Beale, Benoit Magimel and Mathieu Kassovitz among the ensemble. English subtitles. Opening in Hong Kong on October 10, 2026. Early audience rating: 7.8/10 from 234 votes.

What viewers said
Though it does leave it until the end, Antonin Baudry does put up a disclaimer acknowledging that there's a fair degree of cinematic licence been taken with this depiction of the rise of Charles de Gaulle from upstart provincial soldier to leader of the Free French during the Nazi occupation of his country. We start in 1940 with France effectively partitioned. […]
