The verdict

There are not yet enough audience votes to give this a reliable score. It is not currently playing in Hong Kong cinemas. 118 minutes.

What it is about

Shortly before the 1973 Chilean coup, CIA agents Chris and Lee are dispatched from Santiago to Easter Island by their bureau chief, MJ. Among the Island’s iconic statues, and as the longtime partners wrestle with their dark pasts and present conspiracies, Chris’s newfound bond with a pair of rebellious students threatens to send everyone’s trip to this remote paradise sideways. The latest work from Oscar-winning director Martin McDonagh is a poignant story of friendship, and the devastating gap between the ideal and reality, accompanied with his trademark incisive dialogue and dark humour. John Malkovich’s tour-de-force performance earned him the Volpi Cup for Best Actor at the Venice Film Festival.

What to expect

Martin McDonagh relocates his verbal sparring to Easter Island, 1973. John Malkovich and Sam Rockwell play CIA partners whose stopover among the moai turns into a reckoning with old sins and fresh conspiracies. The 118-minute picture leans on talk rather than set pieces — McDonagh’s dialogue is as sharp as ever, and the Chilean cast (Mariana di Girolamo, Ailín Salas) give the story its charge. Malkovich won the Volpi Cup at Venice for a performance that holds the movie’s moral messiness together. It opens in Hong Kong on 17 September 2026, playing in English with Chinese subtitles. Certificate and format details are yet to be confirmed.
