What it is about

Following the death of his father, Jay Gardiner goes diving off the central Coast of California in search of his remains, but is swallowed by a massive sperm whale. While trapped inside its belly with only one hour of oxygen left, Jay comes to realize that the hard-earned lessons his father imparted may be the key to his escape.

What to expect

Brian Duffield directs Austin Abrams as a diver swallowed by a sperm whale off the California coast, left with one hour of oxygen and the echo of his dead father's voice. The premise is pure claustrophobia — most of the 106 minutes are spent inside the animal, and the movie commits to the grim physical logic of that space without turning it into a monster movie. Josh Brolin and Elisabeth Shue appear in the memories that push the story forward. Rated IIA, playing across all eight districts with 28 screenings this week and tickets from $55. English dialogue, Chinese subtitles.
