The verdict
Audiences rate it 6.6 out of 10 on TMDB across 241 votes — a solid score. It is not currently playing in Hong Kong cinemas. Category IIB · 118 minutes.
What it is about
The film tells the story of Hig (Jacob Elordi), a young pilot who, together with a military survivalist, Bangley (Josh Brolin), has carved out an efficient but isolated homestead in a brutal postapocalyptic world. But when Hig receives a mysterious radio transmission, he ventures into the unknown in search of the hope and humanity he still believes exist.
What to expect
Ridley Scott adapts Peter Heller’s novel into a stripped-down survival story set in a pandemic-emptied Colorado. Jacob Elordi’s Hig flies a small plane over the ruins, trading patrols with Josh Brolin’s Bangley, a neighbour whose answer to every threat is overwhelming firepower. The rhythm is quiet and methodical until a crackling radio transmission pulls Hig beyond the perimeter. Scott keeps the action sparse and the landscape vast; the movie is less interested in set pieces than in what isolation does to a person. Margaret Qualley, Guy Pearce, Allison Janney, and Benedict Wong fill out the cast. Early audiences rate it 7.2/10. Rated IIB, 118 minutes. Opens August 26 across 21 cinemas and 15 districts in Hong Kong, screening in IMAX, Dolby Atmos, and China Giant Screen. Tickets from HK$55. English with Chinese subtitles.

What viewers said
Life in a post-apocalyptic world is a common theme in movies (especially, if you believe what’s published in the media, the increasing prospect that such an outcome may be coming closer to a reality than any of us might like). In many cases, these films follow the experiences of a resourceful, innovative protagonist who quietly but skillfully struggles to survive, successfully managing to fend off foes while cerebrally wrestling with feelings about what’s been lost.
