The verdict

There are not yet enough audience votes to give this a reliable score. It is not currently playing in Hong Kong cinemas. Category IIA · 122 minutes.

What to expect

The third Madoka Magica movie picks up after a universe-altering sacrifice, and the result is a story that spends most of its 122 minutes questioning whether that sacrifice actually fixed anything. Homura Akemi is the focus, and the movie stays close to her isolation and growing suspicion that the peaceful world around her is a lie. The magical-girl visuals are as bright and ornate as ever, but they keep curdling into something stranger — collaged textures, claustrophobic architecture, and a sense that the frame itself is untrustworthy. This is a slow, interior movie, more interested in mood and psychological unravelling than in set pieces. It assumes you know the series; anyone walking in cold will be lost. The Hong Kong release is wide enough to be convenient: 32 screenings across six cinemas in five districts over the next week, with tickets from HK$60. It carries a IIA certificate. English and Chinese subtitles are provided.
