What it is about
Yuta comes to a country town in Kyushu to take care of his father-in-law Makoto, who is recovering from a fractured leg. While helping out with Makoto's old-fashioned photo studio, Yuta exchanges smartphone videos with his wife Yuki and daughter Hana in Tokyo. Between home-cooked meals, daily dog walks and quiet moments scrolling through old photos, the small details of daily life accumulate as a succession of recordings and memories, gently and vividly bringing to light the ongoing existence of their lives as a family.
Best New Narrative Director Award, Tribeca Film Festival
What to expect
A man decamps to rural Kyushu to mind his father-in-law's photo studio while his wife and daughter remain in Tokyo. The movie stitches together smartphone clips, old prints, and the unhurried routine of meals and dog walks—less a plotted story than an accumulation of recorded moments. It won Best New Narrative Director at Tribeca. Screened as part of HKAFF. Japanese with English subtitles. 97 min. The pace is deliberate; anyone looking for incident should look elsewhere.
