What to expect
Daigo Matsui structures this Japanese romance around a single day — a birthday — and the memories it stirs for a couple who have already split. The movie moves backwards and forwards through their relationship, letting small gestures and half-finished conversations carry the weight of what’s been lost. Sosuke Ikematsu and Sairi Ito play the former lovers with a low-key naturalism that suits the COVID-era setting, where much of the story unfolds in taxis, cramped apartments, and quiet streets. The Jim Jarmusch influence shows in the unhurried pacing and the way the movie treats Tokyo at night as a character in its own right. At 115 minutes it asks for patience, and the 6.8 audience score suggests not everyone will find the payoff.
