What to expect
Kogonada shoots Hong Kong as a city of glass and glare, a place where a young violinist can feel invisible even when she is surrounded by people. The movie follows her through a period of illness and fresh grief, during which she starts seeing a future version of herself. When the woman from those visions turns up in the flesh, the encounter is handled less as a thriller twist than as a quiet, destabilising fact. The 99-minute runtime is spent in a deliberately drifting register — long held shots, streets at night, the hum of a city that never pauses for its loneliest inhabitants. This is an HKAFF title screening in English with English subtitles. Anyone expecting the narrative clarity of the director’s earlier *Artificial Affection* should know this is a leaner, more formally restless work.
