What it is about
Koji Yakusho was already a star in 1996, but Suo Masayuki’s global breakout hit made him a household name and crowned him with numerous accolades. Revealing a gentler, more down-to-earth side of its usually intense star, this delightful modern classic follows a bored salaryman who takes up ballroom dancing on a whim. Through his friendship with his eccentric classmates, he realises that dancing was what he needed to escape his ennui. Yakusho’s adorably awkward yet charming character epitomised a whole generation of strong, silent men who could all use a little ballroom dancing in their lives. It also set the record for the highest-grossing film at Broadway Cinematheque, grossing over $2 million at the box office.
What to expect
Koji Yakusho plays a Tokyo salaryman so hollowed out by routine that he signs up for ballroom dancing without quite knowing why. Suo Masayuki’s 1996 comedy-drama gets its warmth from the misfits he meets in the class — Naoto Takenaka and Akira Emoto among them — and from Tamiyo Kusakari’s guarded instructor, who has her own reasons for being there. The movie originally broke Broadway Cinematheque’s box-office record, taking over HK$2 million, and it returns for the cinema’s bc30 programme. Certificate I, 136 minutes, English and Chinese subtitles. Screens 17 September 2026 at Broadway Cinematheque and selected venues.
