The verdict

Audiences rate it 5.9 out of 10 on TMDB across 120 votes — a mixed reception. It is playing 10 times at 5 cinemas across 3 districts, from HK$60 to HK$125 depending on cinema and time. The cheapest seat is at GALA CINEMA (Langham Place) in Mong Kok, HK$60. Category III · 93 minutes.

What it is about

A young girl, Bela, forms a relationship with a sinister entity in her home who looks uncannily like her own mother.

What to expect

Rob Savage keeps the running time to 93 minutes and wastes little of it on setup: a girl, a house, and a presence that looks exactly like her mother. Jessica Chastain plays dual duty as the real and the wrong version, and the movie works hardest in the moments where the difference is a flicker rather than a scream. Jay Duplass and Arabella Olivia Clark round out the household. It is rated III in Hong Kong, so restricted to 18 and over, and this week it is only at one cinema — four screenings across the next seven days, cheapest ticket 60 HKD. English audio with Chinese subtitles. The premise is tighter than the scares, but if you want a contained psychological horror that bets on unease over gore, it holds its nerve for most of that hour and a half.

What viewers said

When I was watching this movie, I kept thinking of Poltergeist. The plot is similar enough to Poltergeist to make the comparison. Only in this one they actually believe the kid straight off the bat, which is refreshing and works quite well. It is a very spooky movie and it does play very well. It's well acted and well produced, and some of the violence feels very earned when you get to the twist at the end. I really did enjoy this movie, and I think that you will too.

We could have had Legosi, or even Bartok, but no - this "Bela" (Arabella Olivia Clark) is just an ordinary little girl growing up in, yep you've already guessed - a family with some secrets to keep. Her "Daddo" (Jay Duplass) does most of her rearing as successful mommy (Jessica Chastain) is out making a good living for them all. It turns out, though, that it isn't just the parents who have secrets, "Bela" has one too - and it inhabits her closet. […]
