The verdict

There are not yet enough audience votes to give this a reliable score. It is not currently playing in Hong Kong cinemas. 114 minutes.

What it is about

After leaving prison, Alice starts working as a waitress in a small cafeteria next to an auto repair garage. She befriends a young man named Milo, who works at the garage. Alice’s real reason for getting close to him is deeply personal: Milo is her son.

What to expect

Alice is fresh out of prison and working a counter in a roadside cafeteria beside a garage. She gets to know Milo, one of the mechanics. The friendship she cultivates is not chance: Milo is the son she cannot bring herself to tell. Nicole Garcia directs Marion Cotillard and Théodore Pellerin in this French drama, which runs 114 minutes and plays in Hong Kong from 10 October. The movie is in French with English subtitles. It is a restrained, character-driven piece built on what goes unsaid between two people who are close but unknown to each other, so the pleasure is in the performances rather than in narrative payoff. It will suit viewers who like European drama that trusts its audience to sit with discomfort. There is no action or comic relief, and the tone is contemplative throughout, which makes it a poor fit for young children or anyone after a light night out. It is on at selected cinemas; check listings for session times.
