The verdict

There are not yet enough audience votes to give this a reliable score. It is not currently playing in Hong Kong cinemas. 99 minutes.

What it is about

In a Rohingya refugee camp in Bangladesh, Somira and Shafi share a modest yet happy childhood with their grandfather and grandaunt. One day, carrying their few belongings, the family boards a crowded boat crossing the sea to reunite with their uncle in Malaysia. The siblings cannot understand why strangers treat them like animals, or why the "hometown" the elders speak of feels so far away. Long drawn to the stories of Myanmar and immigrants, Japanese director Akio Fujimoto poignantly captures the cruel realities of the Rohingya people through the innocent eyes of children.

What to expect

Akio Fujimoto follows two Rohingya children as their family leaves a Bangladesh camp for Malaysia by boat. The siblings cannot grasp why strangers treat them like animals or why the elders’ talk of “home” feels so far away — and the movie never steps outside their bafflement to explain. That restraint is what makes it land: the cruelty is simply there, seen but not underlined. Bengali dialogue, English subtitles. 99 min. Opens 6 October 2026 as part of HKAFF. The certificate and format (standard or IMAX) have not been confirmed.
