What it is about

In the days following the surrender of Germany in May 1945, a group of young German prisoners of war is handed over to the Danish authorities and subsequently sent to the West Coast, where they are ordered to remove the more than two million mines that the Germans had placed in the sand along the coast. With their bare hands, crawling around in the sand, the boys are forced to perform the dangerous work under the leadership of a Danish sergeant.

What to expect

Martin Zandvliet’s drama drops you onto a Danish beach with a squad of German POWs who are barely out of boyhood, ordered to clear two million mines with their bare hands. The movie earns its tension not from explosions but from the grinding, inch-by-inch crawl across the sand and the shifting dynamic between the young prisoners and the Danish sergeant who despises them. Roland Møller gives the sergeant a flinty, unreadable edge, while Louis Hofmann and Joel Basman make the boys’ fear feel physical rather than performed. At 101 minutes the picture stays tight, and the IIB certificate reflects sustained menace rather than gore. It opens in Hong Kong on 17 September 2026 with English and Chinese subtitles. No special formats are listed, so expect a standard theatrical run.
