What it is about

Aspiring illustrator Haru works as a part-time helper at a second-hand bookstore. After work, she has a hidden identity – a professional cat stalker! Wandering every possible hidden corner, she charts her feline encounters onto a hand-drawn map. However, these serene peaceful days are interrupted by the disappearance of the shop’s pet cat. Based on illustrator Harumin Asao’s popular essays, the solitude and mundanity of city life is rendered more adorable by the feline neighbour.

What to expect

Haru works part-time in a second-hand bookshop, but her real hours are spent mapping the city’s cats — every alley encounter logged on a hand-drawn chart. Based on Harumin Asao’s essays, Takuji Suzuki’s movie treats this obsession as a quiet, unsentimental fact of life, not a quirk to be cured. When the shop’s own cat vanishes, the search tightens the movie’s wandering rhythm without ever raising its voice. The pleasure is in watching Haru look: at rooftops, under vans, along canal paths. One screening this week, one cinema. Japanese with English subtitles. 103 min, Cat I, from HK$95.
