What it is about
Young JoJo suddenly comes into a stack of casino chips worth a million and decides to pay off her runaway father’s debt, asking the down-on-his-luck debt collector Hua to gamble on her behalf. In Macau’s chaotic casinos, they form an unlikely alliance, navigating wins, losses, and life’s challenges together. When the final bet arrives, fate cruelly tests them, stripping them of everything, yet revealing the true gift life has been offering.
What to expect
A teenager walks into a Macau casino not to play, but to hand a stack of chips to a debt collector and ask him to gamble on her behalf. That setup is the engine of this 115-minute drama, which spends its time on the wary, pragmatic alliance between JoJo and Hua rather than on the gambling itself. The movie is in Cantonese with English and Chinese subtitles, rated IIB, and is playing a modest run: nine screenings over the next seven days, split across two cinemas in two districts. Tickets start at HK$60. The small scale suits a story that stays close to its two leads and the question of what they owe each other when the money runs out.
