What it is about
An extraordinary love story between two worlds: Hamburg artist Sophie travels to Taiwan to come to terms with the sudden, unexplained death of her lover Ai-ling. In Taipei, a journalist latches onto her heels, seemingly obsessed with Ai-ling's fate. At the same time, the mysterious stranger does everything in her power to seduce Sophie.
Inspired by Taiwan's rapid social and technological development alongside ancient Chinese culture, Monika Treut weaves a narrative that drifts between past and present. At its core lie Chinese ghost myths, where traditionally oppressed women become erotic, daring beings who finally follow their own desires, and thus also find a way to take revenge.
What to expect
Monika Treut and Ben Hirshhorn’s drama follows Sophie (Inga Busch), a Hamburg artist who goes to Taipei after her lover Ai-ling dies without explanation. Once there, a journalist attaches herself to Sophie, probing into Ai-ling’s past while openly pursuing Sophie herself. The movie draws on Chinese ghost myths — stories in which constrained women become erotic, wilful, and sometimes vengeful — and sets them against the friction between Taiwan’s tech-driven present and its older ritual culture. The result is a quiet, drifting piece that moves between past and present without marking the joins. It is less a ghost story than a mood piece about grief and desire, played out in hotel rooms, temples and city streets. The English-language dialogue carries Chinese and English subtitles. At 89 minutes and rated IIB (unsuitable for under-18s), it opens in Hong Kong on 27 September 2026 and is likely to play in a handful of art-house venues rather than a wide commercial run — check listings closer to the date.
