What it is about

During a time of unrest in Shazhou, a once-prosperous Tang Dynasty outpost now under Tibetan control, a rebellion led by Zhang Yichao sparks hope for liberation. As the conflict intensifies, a group of unlikely heroes—including a thief, a deserter, and a general’s daughter—unite to fight for their people’s freedom.

What to expect

Cao Dun directs this Tang Dynasty siege drama, shot in Mandarin and running just over two hours. The cast is built around Zhang Yu, Shawn Dou Xiao, Lü Liang, Cai Lu, Zhao Yunzhuo and Gong Lei as a makeshift band — a thief, a deserter and a general’s daughter — thrown together when Zhang Yichao’s uprising tries to wrest Shazhou back from Tibetan control. The movie leans on large-scale battle staging and the friction between its reluctant allies. Rated IIB, it is screening five times across three cinemas in two districts this week, with tickets from HK$60. English and Chinese subtitles are provided.
