The verdict

There are not yet enough audience votes to give this a reliable score. It is playing 1 time at 1 cinema across 1 district, from HK$100. The cheapest seat is at PREMIERE ELEMENTS (Kowloon Station) in Tsim Sha Tsui, HK$100. Category III · 98 minutes.

What it is about

Anais in Love, a buoyant French comedy from director Charline Bourgeois-Tacquet, a tale of self-discovery as literate and delightful as it is unexpected, keeping both Anaïs and viewers off-balance until the very last moment.

A spirited and romantic thirtysomething Anaïs in her manic search for stability. Behind on her rent, contemplating breaking up with her boyfriend, and struggling to complete her thesis, Anaïs searches for inspiration while hurtling through lovers with abandon. When her affair with an older book publisher Daniel leads to her falling for his live-in partner Emilie, a brilliant and luminescent novelist, things get especially messy.

What to expect

Anaïs is thirty, broke, and sleeping with people she probably shouldn't. Her thesis is going nowhere, her boyfriend is on the way out, and she has just taken up with an older publisher — then promptly falls for his partner, a novelist. Charline Bourgeois-Tacquet's debut keeps the tone light and the protagonist's judgment terrible, which is where most of the comedy comes from. It is talky and character-driven rather than gag-heavy, so the 98 minutes depend on how much time you want to spend inside a charming mess. The Hong Kong release is a bcSunday one-off: a single screening at a single cinema this week, III-rated, with English and Chinese subtitles. Tickets start at $100.
