What it is about
Following the tragic death of her teenage son, Manuela travels from Madrid to Barcelona in an attempt to contact the long-estranged father the boy never knew. She reunites with an old friend, an outspoken transgender sex worker, and befriends a troubled actress and a young nun. What to expect
Manuela goes to Barcelona looking for the father her dead son never met. What she finds instead is a makeshift family: an old friend who is a transgender sex worker, a nun, and an actress she once impersonated. Almodóvar shoots all of this in the high-gloss reds and blues that became his signature, and the 102 minutes move between soap-opera plotting and genuine tenderness. Cecilia Roth, Marisa Paredes, Penélope Cruz and Candela Peña share the screen without anyone fighting for it.
