What it is about

At a fading vacation resort, 11-year-old Sophie treasures rare time together with her loving and idealistic father, Calum (Paul Mescal). As a world of adolescence creeps into view, beyond her eye Calum struggles under the weight of life outside of fatherhood. Twenty years later, Sophie's tender recollections of their last holiday become a powerful and heartrending portrait of their relationship, as she tries to reconcile the father she knew with the man she didn't, in Charlotte Wells’ superb and searingly emotional debut film.

What to expect

Charlotte Wells’ debut follows 11-year-old Sophie on a Turkish resort holiday with her father Calum, played by Paul Mescal. The movie stays close to Sophie’s point of view, catching the small rituals and bored afternoons of a package holiday while hinting at the sadness Calum hides from her. Frankie Corio gives an unaffected performance that anchors the movie’s lighter moments, and Mescal keeps his charm laced with something unreachable. The structure cuts between the holiday and the adult Sophie looking back, but it never explains — it just lets the gaps sit. The movie runs 101 minutes and is rated IIA, opening in Hong Kong on 17 September 2026 with English and Chinese subtitles. It is playing a limited release, so check listings. The cinematography uses natural light and close framing that benefits from a cinema screen, though standard projection is fine — this is not a movie that needs premium formats.
