The verdict
There are not yet enough audience votes to give this a reliable score. It is not currently playing in Hong Kong cinemas. 117 minutes.
What it is about
Annie Ernaux is invited to sign her latest book in the city of her childhood, Rouen. As she travels there, she is overcome with vertigo and is plunged back into her first night with a man. A night whose shockwave spread violently through her body and across the rest of her life...
What to expect
Judith Godrèche adapts Annie Ernaux’s memoir into a drama that stays close to the texture of memory itself. The movie cuts between the present-day writer—played by Valérie Dréville—and her younger self (Tess Barthélemy) during the summer of 1958, when a single night with a man left a mark she is still trying to name. The storytelling is elliptical and unsentimental; Godrèche holds the camera on faces and bodies rather than explaining the past. At 117 minutes, it asks for patience, and the French dialogue with English subtitles keeps you inside Ernaux’s language. The movie opens in Hong Kong on 10 October 2026 as part of the French Cinepanorama, so it will play a limited run at smaller independent venues rather than multiplex chains. No certificate has been published, but the subject matter points to a mature audience.
